History

Ciasa Vervei stands on the remains of an old building dating back to World War I. Later it became the home of the cantoniere, the person who maintained the Great Dolomite Road. Inaugurated in 1909, it winds through the most beautiful peaks of the Dolomites, connecting Cortina d’Ampezzo to Bolzano.

The hotel-restaurant was renovated a decade ago, following the principles of mountain eco-sustainability and using natural materials such as raw clay for the walls and larch and stone pine wood for the furnishings, sourced from the Natural Park.

The restoration was possible thanks to the Regole d’Ampezzo, an ancient thousand-year-old institution formed by the descendants of the original families of the Ampezzo Valley. It was created with the purpose of collectively managing pastures and forests, which were essential for the survival of the population.
Among the purposes of the Regole are also the preservation and promotion of Ampezzo’s language, culture and traditions. The Regole institution is recognized by Italian state law through specific laws that protect its special reality. Since 1990, the Regole have also managed the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park.
